STATEMENT
In the last year I have been working with encaustic painting. I like working with beeswax and pigment and watching the wax move as I heat it. It takes on a life of its own, taking the image for a ride creating sometimes surprising effects. My current painting has become more free from angst and judgement, and often goes down without a plan.

I have always loved to make things. But it was after my dad died when I was in my early thirties that I felt the strong compulsion to express myself via drawings, photography and paint. Something about losing my dad set something buzzing.
So most of my early paintings in the archive are glimpses into my angst about my mom Pat, and my dad, and of course my marriage.

artist bio

I was born and raised in the Skagit Valley in Washington state. Graduating from the University of Washington in 1970, I earned a BA in English Literature.  In 1971 I taught school in Seattle, then moved to Mount Vernon in 1979. In 1989 I attended Cornish College of the Arts until 1992 studying photography and painting. In 1994 until about 2002 I taught art photography, and later oil painting at Skagit Valley College. Always with paint brush in hand, I am surrounded by the richest of subject matter.... my family.
